 Jason Matheny Named Deputy Assistant to the President for Technology and National Security

The Biden administration has selected Jason Matheny, former director of the Intelligence Advanced Research Activity, as deputy assistant to the president for technology and national security, and deputy director for national security in the Office of Science and Technology Policy. Matheny, a former commissioner on the National Security Commissions on Artificial Intelligence, will also serve as coordinator for technology and national security at the National Security Council.

Matheny, founder and former director of Georgetown University’s Center for Security and Emerging Technology, will lead the race to stay in front of AI, especially as it relates to defense. President Biden has committed to expanding investment in emerging technologies.

Matheny, who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Chicago and an MBA from Duke University was Director of Research at the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford University, which focused on existential risks to humanity. Matheny has been noted for his research to develop vegetable-based meat substitutes that look and taste like meat, and are acceptable to vegans.
